The frauds are sophisticated, with members from a well-organized Nigerian syndicate working primarily out of the Table View area on Cape Town’s west coast, posing as wealthy retirees looking for love. The Black Axe members detained in the early hours of Tuesday are also accused of utilizing a corporate email breach scam to defraud firms out of millions of rand. The Sunday Times previously reported on the group’s victims in South Africa, some of whom had their life savings and even their pensions swindled out of them. Hundreds of thousands of “romance scams” are thought to be perpetrated by the gang. According to TimesLIVE sources, the creator of the Black Axe “Cape Town Zone” was among those arrested.
